George Latimer's winning streak continued Tuesday night as the Westchester County executive won the Democratic primary in NY-16 over Rep. Jamaal Bowman.
In a victory speech, Latimer called for more civility following the contentious election.
“We have to fight to make sure we don’t vilify each other and we remember that we’re all Americans, and our common future is bound together," he told supporters at an event in White Plains.
“We argue, we debate, we find a way to come together,” he said, adding that all representatives had a duty to find ways to work across political divides and prevent the country from splintering.
Latimer has held several local seats including Rye City Council (1987-1990), Westchester legislator including two terms as chair (1991-2003), New York State Assembly (2004-2012), New York State Senate (2013-2017) and Westchester County Executive (2017-Present).
The district covers southern Westchester and part of the northern Bronx.

After what was often a nasty and contentious race, Latimer called for unity within the Democratic party. But bowman told his supporters he would continue to fight. "Our opponents, not opponent, may have won this round at this time in this place. But this will be a battle for our humanity and justice for the rest of our lives."
As of right now, former Scarsdale mayor and pediatrician Dr. Miriam Flisser, who lost to Bowman in the 2022 general election, is the Republican nominee again in November. Regardless of June's result, Bowman's name will appear along the Working Families Party line on the November ballot.
